About

About BIG SPLASH

We live locally and we are parents too. Over the past 18 years in South Africa and Canada, We have taught thousands of children and adults to learn to swim with a pioneering approach. We understand the best environment to teach children to learn to swim, while having loads of fun.

Our highly trained, gentle and patient instructors are passionate about teaching children and adults of all ages one of life’s most valuable and greatest skills.

Our Approach

Our approach is based on the principle that learning to swim proficiently enhances both physical and mental well-being. Our unique BIG SPLASH swimming lessons provide a simple and natural way to become water-safe while adopting a correct and comfortable swimming style in a fun, non-intimidating way. With our small (that is always warm), indoor heated pool we help children to adapt to these philosophies without the fears and distractions that come with classes in large, over-crowded public pools.

Each program ranges from infant, toddler and children. All students work with their instructors on a personal level.
Our Programs

How to swim and master the strokes gracefully and easily.

All students and parents work with their instructors on a personal level. Courses range from infant through to competitive level so there’s consistency in both our teaching team and methodology.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve just had a baby and I want to be sure they are water-safe as quickly as possible. How old must they be to have their first swimming lesson and how long will it take them to learn how to keep afloat?

Babies start with classes at six months as they can float at that age if they are in a relaxed state of mind. By the age of 25 months, babies who started swimming before their first birthday can swim comfortably, covering long distances and holding their breath for over 10 seconds.

This does take of hours of practice and very gradual lengthening of the swims, so it’s not a good idea to try this at home or at your local rec center. Babies should finish each swim relaxed and calm, not panting and stressed from taking in water.

I can’t swim but I want to teach my two-year-old child to swim. How do I do this?

You need to be fully comfortable in the water before enrolling with your baby.  Our BIG SPLASH for Babies lessons rely a lot on parental participation in the water and your child’s confidence in the pool will very much depend on yours. Birthtime is a great opportunity to get some practice in with your baby, and making a game out of being in the water together at every opportunity will help prepare you both for the BIG SPLASH’s sessions. A great idea is to bring your child’s favourite toy to the first session and sing the songs you have learnt in class on the way to the lessons and in the tub.

What’s the best age to start learning to swim?

The best age to start for babies is between six and 12 months old. At this age the water feels natural and they’re comfortable. These very young babies still seem to have memories of the womb.

At around 19-24 month, toddlers enter the ‘terrible twos’ and it’s easier to teach water adjustment and breath control before this phase. But, with our creative and interactive curriculum, it’s never too late. The group classes work miracles and motivate children to participate at any age.
